French

At St Mary’s Primary School, we are excited to offer French through our Teachers as Co-Learners (TCL) approach. In this model, your child’s classroom teacher learns French alongside the students, supported by a Language Assistant and a specialised curriculum. This shared learning journey creates a positive, encouraging environment where everyone feels comfortable to try, practise and grow together.

Little and Often Rather than one long lesson each week, students learn French through short, daily “mini-lessons.” These regular opportunities to hear and use the language help build confidence and support long-term learning in a natural and enjoyable way.

What it looks like in the classroom French becomes part of everyday classroom life. Teachers model learning by “having a go” alongside their students—making mistakes, practising new words and celebrating progress together. This helps create a safe and supportive space where children feel confident to join in.

Students learn practical, everyday language they can use straight away—such as greeting others, following instructions or asking simple questions. Because teachers are learning too, French often continues beyond the lesson, becoming part of routines and conversations throughout the day.
